Ghana Visa Requirements Guide
Overview
Most travelers need a Ghanaian visa arranged before departure. Ghana has sharply limited visa-on-arrival β do not assume you can get one at Kotoka International Airport. Apply through the Ghanaian embassy or consulate covering your jurisdiction, or the official online portal where available.
Visa Types
- Tourist Visa: For leisure and sightseeing, typically single entry
- Business Visa: For meetings, conferences, and commercial visits
- Transit Visa: For passing through Ghana to a third country
- Multiple-Entry Visa: For frequent travelers (harder to obtain, requires justification)
General Requirements
All visa applicants typically need:
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond travel dates)
- Completed visa application form
- Recent passport photographs (white background)
- Proof of financial means (recent bank statements)
- Confirmed travel itinerary and return/onward ticket
- Hotel reservation or a host invitation letter with the host's Ghanaian ID
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory)
Visa-Free and Visa-Exempt Travelers
- Citizens of ECOWAS member states: visa-free for stays up to 90 days
- A small number of additional nationalities have visa-free or visa-on-arrival arrangements β verify for your passport, as these lists change
Processing Times
- Standard Processing: 5-10 working days at most missions
- Express Processing: 2-3 working days where offered (additional fees apply)
- Apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel; December demand spikes with diaspora holiday travel
Application Process
- Complete the application on the official portal or embassy website
- Upload/prepare all supporting documents
- Pay the visa fee (non-refundable)
- Attend an in-person appointment if required by your mission
- Submit your passport for visa affixing
- Collect your passport or receive it by courier
Important Notes
- Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory β carry the certificate; it is checked
- Single-entry visas are the norm; do not plan a side trip to Togo or CΓ΄te d'Ivoire expecting to re-enter on the same visa unless you hold multiple entry
- Requirements vary by embassy β the Ghana mission in Washington may ask for different supporting documents than the one in London
- Visa fees are non-refundable even if refused
Note: Visa policy changes frequently. Always verify current requirements with the Ghanaian embassy or consulate in your country before booking non-refundable travel.
